This lesson is designed to meet the following South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards and Indicators for English 1 and ISTE Standards for Students.
English 1 Inquiry-Based Literary Standards
Standard 2: Transact with texts to formulate questions, propose explanations, and consider alternative views and multiple perspectives.
Standard 3: Construct knowledge, applying disciplinary concepts and tools, to build deeper understanding of the world through exploration, collaboration, and analysis.
English 1 Communication Standards
Standard 1: Interact with others to explore ideas and concepts, communicate meaning, and develop logical interpretations through collaborative conversations; build 4 upon the ideas of others to clearly express one’s own views while respecting diverse perspectives.
Standard 3: Communicate information through strategic use of multiple modalities and multimedia to enrich understanding when presenting ideas and information.
Standard 4: Critique how a speaker addresses content and uses craft techniques that stylistically and structurally inform, engage, and impact audience and convey messages.

- 4.1 Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, identifying any fallacies in reasoning or exaggerated or distorted evidence.

ISTE Standards and Indicators

- 3d Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.
- 6d Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.
LESSON OBJECTIVES
The students will demonstrate mastery of the identified standards and indicators by meeting the following learning objectives.
- Objective 1: Given the three workshop texts, the student will collaborate with a partner to list 3 arguments for music censorship and 3 arguments against music censorship.
- Objective 2: Given instructions for a role-play scenario, group members will collaboratively assign roles for the role-play to each group member.
- Objective 3: Given his/her role, the student will state his/her position regarding music censorship and provide 3 details to support the position.
- Objective 4: Given a menu of software applications, each team will choose applications to record, edit and share their role play scenarios that are a minimum of 5 minutes long.
- Objective 5: After viewing the role play, observers will complete a graphic organizer identifying each participant’s opinion and providing one reason why he or she has this opinion.
- Objective 6: After viewing the role play and given structured responses, observers will provide one piece of constructive feedback to each role play participant.
