Part 4: Require Learner Participation
- Require Active Mental Engagement by Learners: The use of Nearpod to introduce the lesson facilitates the active mental engagement by all learners. The Nearpod lesson requires every student to provide a response to the questions posted. By facilitating the viewing of the first eight slides, the teacher can monitor the students’ responses to these questions. This allows the teacher to ensure that students are engaged and that they understand the purpose of the lesson. The use of videos in the Nearpod lesson also serves to keep students mentally engaged in the lesson. Students are required to do their own thinking during this portion of the lesson and cannot rely on peers to do the thinking for them.
- Engage Learners in Practice of New Knowledge or Skills: Students are required to immediately put their new knowledge and skills to the test. After viewing the Nearpod lesson, students work with their group members to plan and deliver the role play. This requires the students to incorporate all their new knowledge and skills into the final product.
- Support Learning with Technology and Media: Students are required to use a variety of technology and media resources for the project. To begin with, they must use their Chromebooks and the Internet to complete the project. They must also use the following applications to complete the requirements of the project: Nearpod, YouTube, WeVideo, KidBlog, Google Docs, and Google Classroom.
- Provide Performance Feedback Prior to Formal Assessment: Informal feedback is provided frequently throughout the lesson. During the Nearpod lesson, the teacher provides feedback to students as they answer the questions within the lesson. As the students work with their group members, the teacher circulates to monitor progress and provide feedback. The teacher also reviews the mock talk show scripts created by the students to provide feedback prior to the students filming their talk show.
