Grouping Redesign
The goal of this assigment was to redesign an image to create more effective grouping of the content. The original image is an instructional slide. Research in the area of cognitive processing strongly indicates that learning is enhanced when spatial contiguity is observed. In other words, when text is presented in close proximity to the associated images. The orignial slide presented the two images on the left side of the screen, and all of the text on the right side of the screen. Additional processing is required to connect the image with the corresponding text.
In redesigning the image, I specifically grouped the "Identical Twin" diagram and text together and the "Fraternal Twin" diagram and text together. I accomplished this by placing the diagram/text for identical twins on the left side of the screen, and the diagram/text for fraternal twins on the right side of the screen, and divided the two sides with a solid vertical line. I further highlighted the grouping by left justifying the identical twin text and right justifying the fraternal twin text. Finally, I broke apart the text into sections so that it was more closely linked to the part of the image being referenced.
With effective grouping, the information in the final image is easier to comprehend and it will be more likely that the learner will effectively process the new information into long-term memory.
