Enhance Meaning Redesign
The goal of this assigment was to redesign an image to enhance its meaning. The original image was a list of home related Spanish vocabulary. The table provided the necessary information, but lacked any elements to create visual interest or meaning. Most importantly, the original image did not contain any elements to aid in comprehension. Also the before image contained an error that identified the Spanish word for "Living Room" as "Living Room" which could confuse a novice learner.
The most obvious way to create meaning was to embed the vocabulary within an image that contained pictures that represented the various rooms in a home or apartment. I chose to use a slice diagram of a home that clearly showed the different rooms in a home. The furniture effectively represents each room and would help the learner to connect the new Spanish vocabulary to prior knowledge of rooms in a house. Placing the text in close proximity to each room it references further aids the comprehension of the learner.
The after image is more likely to foster comprehension on the part of the learner and to support the transfer of the new vocabulary from working memory to long-term memory.
