Animation Production
I developed an animation using PowToon that will be used by my students to review test-taking strategies for the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). The video would be available in Google Classroom and students would review the video prior to taking the SRI. My reading intervention students take the SRI five times per year. Currently, I use a basic PowerPoint presentation to review test-taking strategies prior to each test administration. My instructional intent is to use the animation that I designed as a model for students, and then to require student groups to develop their own animation videos that explain their best tips for taking the SRI. I will then choose one of the videos to view prior to each testing session. The videos would also be made available to other ELA teachers in our school. The ELA teachers are required to give the SRI test three times per year, but are often unfamiliar with the test and find it difficult to prepare their students.
My video adhered to Mayer's coherence principle by excluding extraneous pictures, words, and sounds. The animations were chosen to enhance the video without distracting from the content of the video. The test-taking tips are segmented over several screens and students will have the opportunity to watch the video independently and can pause and rewind as needed. The wording and tone used were conversational in keeping with the personalization principle. Redundancy was avoided by not adding narration of the on-screen text. The vocabulary and concepts are very familiar to the students and as such reading the text should not create a processing overload.
