Graphic Space Redesign
The goal of this assignment was to redesign an image that displayed poor use of graphic space. Graphic space is the two-dimensional design space used to create a visual design. The image I chose was a flyer for a group piano class. The original design contained holes in the layout and had inconsistent spacing among the elements. The original design contained areas of white space that did not serve a purpose. The elements in the design were also inconsistently spaced, with a large variation in the amount of spacing between elements. The result was an image that was difficult to comprehend.
To address the graphic space issues, I created a new document and used rulers and the grid to address spacing and layout issues. I used the rulers to great an even white space margin around the outside of the design elements. No elements within the design crossed into this space. I also used a grid to provide consistent spacing among elements. I made copies of design elements that were present more than once so that the size would be consistent. I also used the same shapes when appropriate to create a more organized space.
When designing the new image, I considered the top, middle and bottom areas of the image. I used elements in these areas that effectively used the graphic space and drew the eye to the most important information. The after image, containing an effective use of graphic space, is more pleasing to the eye and easier to comprehend.
